Latex- Dries in hours and is easy to cleanup. Most painters like it because two coats can usually be applied in the same day. Latex paint is better for the environment than oil-based paint. Some of the pitfalls are that latex paint doesn't withstand cleaning as well as oil-based paint and it doesn't coat as smoothly or shiny.

Oil-Based (alkyd)- Provides a smooth, shiny look for walls. Sometimes dry times can mean you must wait an entire day before adding a second coat. Many painters use an oil-based primer underneath a latex coat. Pitfalls include a difficult cleanup complete with the use of turpentine or other high-strength paint removers.

Sheen Options-The sheen level of paint describes the level of light that is reflected from the surface, and both latex and oil-base paints have levels of sheen.

• Flat/matte low-gloss/non reflective finish that is good for hiding imperfect walls. May not withstand cleaning or scrubbing as well.
• Eggshell/satin-this sheen is glossier than flat with a soft luster. Because they are more stain resistant/durable, they are good for walls in high traffic and high wear and tear areas such as hallways, children's rooms, and family rooms.
• Semi-gloss-One step up from eggshell as far as stain resistance and cleaning ability. Great for heavy traffic and heavy wear and tear. These are also good for woodwork or cabinets, and come in latex and oil-base.
• Gloss-Just as you would expect, these are the highest levels of gloss. Although these types of paint are the easiest to clean, they show flaws the easiest as well.. Good for kitchens, bathrooms and woodwork.
• Enamel-Varies in level of gloss depending on manufacturer. Can be either semi-gloss or gloss. This finish is hard, durable, and glossy, so it is perfect for the highest traffic areas.
